In the pre-internet days when I was invited into someone’s office or home, I’d go over to their bookshelf and start reading titles. A person’s bookshelf speaks volumes about them and their family. In two minutes, I could usually understand the person’s hobbies, political persuasion, if they had marriage or child rearing problems, if they battled addiction, if they believed in conspiracy theories, enjoyed history, or literature.
In other words, you are what you eat. What you spend your time on is ultimately who you are or will become.
Today, if you really want to know who you are, then review your internet browser history.
Galatians 6:7-9 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
My awesome wife’s browser history is filled with recipes, better relationships ideas, scripture, gospel hymns, website on gardening, caring for kids, wedding planning, helping others, communicating with her folks, plans with friends, medical and financial issues.
One of the major reasons that more than 50% of marriages end in divorce in the USA is because of compounded effect of the movies, songs, and websites Americans feast on. All of this garbage we let into our lives subtly changes us. In the same manner, as living in England will gradually change an American accent over the years, so too the Hollywood and anti-God socialist culture will change you and your family.
Hollywood corrosion can be very tough on family and marriage. What’s a young daughter or young wife to think when she always sees beautiful Hollywood women getting the great guys and having sex with no consequence, while solving crime with a partially unbuttoned shirts and high heels? All the while apparently having an endless supply of make-up and hair products even when held in captivity or marooned? Thus it is important as a husband and father to point out the utter rubbish of this plastic world and to not let yourself be taken in with the lie. Most of you reading this will intellectually understand and agree. However, remember the corrosion is not an intellectual corrosion. It is a subtle moral corrosion. Great mountains are eroded raindrop by raindrop.
Infidelity is the top reason for divorce in the USA and it doesn’t happen simply happen without warning, It is the result of moral erosion.
Moral erosion starts with a simple idea: I want.
James 1:13-15 “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
The “want” becomes an expectation. Fulfilling this expectation results in a financial, emotional, or physical cost, at which point we find we are thirsty for more and we’ve begun the addiction cycle. If the expectation is unfulfilled, it breeds dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction results in bitterness and relationship problems.
It’s all marketing. The goal of marketing is to create a demand.
When you see a rebellious rock band doing all kinds of crazy stuff, just remember that behind that façade is a bunch of boring 40 year old marketing guys figuring out what sound, what press event, what concert schedule, what T-shirts, and what rebellious words are most likely to be sold to the “non-conformists” who conform to buy their junk. It’s not real rebellion. It’s marketing or in other words, temptation and enticement. It’s not real death metal. It’s marketing. I’m not saying the bands have zero talent, there is indeed a lot of talent. The world is full of talent. Marketing folks first focus on what will sell and then find the talent able to deliver the product and profit. What sells are products offered by talented artists that don’t permanently satisfy, offer escapism, distract, feed lust, etc..
Let’s put it another way. America has an obesity problem because of the cheap and easy availability of high-calorie low-fiber foods that spike the blood sugar and leave you craving more. I still get shocked by the sad quantity of morbid obesity on display when walking through the Mid-West airports. Now imagine if feasting on movies, video games, immoral music, porn, etc. resulted in physical weight gain. What would you look like? Would a fork-lift be needed to get you out of your home?
And it’s not just you! Continuing with our analogy, 15% of pre-school children in America are obese! It is not their fault. It’s the fault of Mom and Dad. Obesity causes diabetes and heart problems resulting in early death.
So what are you morally feeding your children? Are they getting fed a steady diet of movies and music that glorify hedonism, pot, alcohol, materialism, anti-God, and socialism? “Want” or lust conceives sin. As James states when sin is finished brings the death of relationships with your spouse, children, and God.
Are you afraid of the conflict necessary to drive a good moral diet?
Kids have no more of desire to eat proper moral food than to eat boring vegetables.
Our family motto which hung above our dining room table for years was Daniel 1:4
Daniel 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
To achieve this goal the world offered “the king’s meat”, but Daniel choose not to defile himself.
Daniel 1:8 “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. … Daniel 1:15-16 “And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat. Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
